Peter Cantlon

Peter Cantlon 1786-1863, born in Tipperary, Ireland. Religious persecution, and the economic crises in Ireland in the late 1830's and early 1840's, caused by famines due to potatoes rotting, and epidemics of cholera, etc., increased his interest in emigration to Canada, which already was at a fever pitch, due to the successes which had ensued to his relatives and friends, who had emigrated to Canada earlier in the nineteenth century, prior to 1841.

Peter Cantlon decided to emigrate to the "Land of the Maple Leaf" also, so he liquidated his substantial possessions in Ireland, transported his family and baggage to Limerick, the embarkation port, secured passage to Canada, boarded the 296-ton brig, MINSTREL, and started on the voyage to the "Promised Land" in the month of March, 1841.
His wife Ann Legere and 4 sons; John, Peter, Arthur, and Samuel; and 3 daughters; Susannah, Catherine, and Bessie emigrated with Peter Cantlon, leaving behind the eldest son David who did come to Canada later.
After the Minstrel was badly damaged due to harsh weather, Peter requested another their passage on another boat, and once again, they started on the long dangerous voyage to Canada.
After a 7 week voyage, the Atlantic crossing was made in safety, and the Cantillion family disembarked at Quebec on May 8th, 1841
