A young man convicted of his role in the "Bathtub Girls" murder of their mother should be spared a jail sentence, his lawyer says.
"Guide him, supervise him but don't lock him up," Alison Mackay urged a Brampton court yesterday.
"He is not a violent person ... he didn't commit murder ... he was far removed from the crime.... He was party to a plan that was well underway (by the time he became involved)."
Prosecutor Mike Cantlon is seeking a term of three years, the maximum allowed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, for the 19-year-old Mississauga man's conviction of conspiracy to commit murder in the 2001 slaying.
Madame Justice Francine Van Melle will render her decision March 5 after hearing sentencing submissions yesterday in connection with the sequel to the trial that led to first-degree murder convictions of the 43-year-old woman's daughters.

starting to make satisfaction guaranteed
But American business had better deliver the real thing, because shoppers like Arlene Cantlon of Riverdale, Ill., are starting to make a scene. Cantlon lost her temper recently in a Venture Stores discount outlet because the chain was making a habit, in her opinion, of failing to have advertised goods in stock. "I asked to speak to the salesgirl in the shoe department, but nobody knew where she was. I waited 35 minutes while they looked for her. Nobody could find her, so I asked to see the store manager. At this point, I had a crowd of customers cheering me on. One woman told me, 'It won't do any good, but good for you!' " Cantlon finally got her audience with the manager, and got some of the merchandise she wanted as well. It was a notable victory, but it need not be all that rare. American consumers would be well advised to follow Arlene Cantlon's example and make noise if they really want their satisfaction guaranteed.

Peter Cantlon
Peter Cantlon 1786-1863, born in Tipperary, Ireland. Religious persecution, and the economic crises in Ireland in the late 1830's and early 1840's, caused by famines due to potatoes rotting, and epidemics of cholera, etc., increased his interest in emigration to Canada, which already was at a fever pitch, due to the successes which had ensued to his relatives and friends, who had emigrated to Canada earlier in the nineteenth century, prior to 1841.
http://www.9sons.com/immigration/cantlonimmigration.htm
Peter Cantlon decided to emigrate to the "Land of the Maple Leaf" also, so he liquidated his substantial possessions in Ireland, transported his family and baggage to Limerick, the embarkation port, secured passage to Canada, boarded the 296-ton brig, MINSTREL, and started on the voyage to the "Promised Land" in the month of March, 1841.
His wife Ann Legere and 4 sons; John, Peter, Arthur, and Samuel; and 3 daughters; Susannah, Catherine, and Bessie emigrated with Peter Cantlon, leaving behind the eldest son David who did come to Canada later.
After the Minstrel was badly damaged due to harsh weather, Peter requested another their passage on another boat, and once again, they started on the long dangerous voyage to Canada.
After a 7 week voyage, the Atlantic crossing was made in safety, and the Cantillion family disembarked at Quebec on May 8th, 1841

Tomb of the Virgin Mary, Jerusalem
At the base of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem is a Crusader church said to mark the Tomb of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. Centered around a quarried-out tomb that may well date from the 1st century, the site is reminiscent of the tomb of Mary's son in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The Tomb of the Virgin is venerated by Muslims because, during his Night Journey from Mecca to Jerusalem, the Prophet Muhammad saw a light over Mary's tomb. In addition, Caliph Umar prayed at Gethsemane in 638.
Steps from the road descend into a square courtyard containing the upper church, which is little more than a c.1130 portal and pointed arch supported on eight marble columns.

st johns gate (above)The first master of the original Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem was Brother Gerard (whose origins remain a mystery). Although the original traditions may go further back, we believe that in about 1080, with the help of certain merchants and pilgrims, the Benedictine abbey of St Mary in Jerusalem, in which Gerard was probably a monk, established a hospice close to the Holy Sepulchre compound. Its aim was to tend to pilgrims visiting the city and the holy places nearby, as well as the poor and sick. In 1099, the First Crusade entered Jerusalem - and the fame of Blessed Gerard and his hospital soon spread. The hospital was independently endowed; and the number of brothers (and sisters) grew. Before long, the Brotherhood of Hospitallers, dedicated to St John the Baptist, assumed a military as well as a nursing character. The Knights, as well as tending to our lords the sick and the poor, served as armed guards for the Hospital and escorts for visiting pilgrims, in addition to fighting in support of the Crusader kings and princes.

Report calls for RCMP to split from federal government
A report released Friday recommended sweeping changes to the RCMP, which would include establishing the force as a separate entity from the federal government, with its own civilian board of managers.
The Task Force on Governance and Cultural Change in the RCMP, headed by Toronto lawyer David Brown also called for the creation of a new independent commission that would hear complaints.

sentence procedure allowed ; a good lesson ;
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- A judge in southern Chile has sentenced a Catholic priest to recite psalms daily during three months as punishment for a traffic violation.
Judge Manuel Perez said he issued the unusual sentence after Father Jose Cornejo said he could not afford the 50,000-peso ($100) fine that would have been the regular sanction for illegal parking in the city of Puerto Montt.
"He will have to recite seven psalms from a book in the Old Testament," Judge Perez told the Santiago daily La Tercera.
"This is not a sentence that just occurred to me," he added.
"I did it as a tribute to Galileo Galilei, one of the greatest scientists of all time, who received a similar sentence from the Catholic Church during three years for saying the Earth rotates around the sun."
The judge ordered a court official who lives near the priest to check daily that the sentence was being fulfilled.
The priest said he had parked his car in front of a school where he works because he lacked the money to pay for public parking

troubling signs in Afghanistan
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Thursday pushed European allies for more troops to re-energize efforts in southern Afghanistan, where the Taliban insurgency has increased its attacks in the 18 months since NATO took command of the war. ............
This year has been the deadliest in Afghanistan since the invasion. More than 6,200 people have been killed in insurgency-related violence, according to an Associated Press tally of figures from Western and Afghan officials. ..........
In a new assessment published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Wednesday, analyst Julianne Smith cautioned that the situation in Afghanistan is growing increasingly unstable.
"Afghanistan is heading in the wrong direction, and short of a complete overhaul of NATO strategy, it threatens to take its people, the future of the alliance and trans-Atlantic relations along with it."

Hebrew Names
(1) General Idea -- The Hebrew Prophet was not merely, as the word commonly implies, a man enlightened by God to foretell events; he was the interpreter and supernaturally enlightened herald sent by Yahweh to communicate His will and designs to Israel. His mission consisted in preaching as well as in foretelling. He had to maintain and develop the knowledge of the Old Law among the Chosen People, lead them back when they strayed, and gradually prepare the way for the new kingdom of God, which the messias was to establish on earth. Prophecy, in general, signifies the supernatural message of the Prophet, and more especially, from custom, the predictive element of the prophetic message.
